Happy 2017! I hope you all had a phenomenal Winter Break and were able to spend quality time with family and friends. As we enter the new year, we have so much to look forward to at Collier County Public Schools.
We are so proud of the continuing success of our students. Last month, the Florida Department of Education released high school graduation rates for the 2015-16 school year. CCPS increased its graduation rate to 86.7%. That is a 2.4 percentage point increase from last year's 84.3% rate! What a wonderful accomplishment heading into the second half of the school year.
I want to thank everyone who made the 2nd Annual CCPS 5K Walk-Run such a huge success. We had more than 1,700 registered participants and 100% school participation. From students, families, staff, community members, and our amazing volunteers, we could not have done it without each and every one of you. A big thank you also to our Power Sponsor, Suncoast Credit Union, and all of our event sponsors.
We have so many things to look forward to in the second half of the school year. To kick things off, the Palmetto Ridge High School marching band will be performing at the Inauguration Parade in Washington, D.C. on January 20. We are so proud of the Marching Pride as they become the first Collier County band to ever march in this parade! On February 16, I will be hosting my first “Tweet Chat” through Twitter. Join me at #CCPSChat at 12:00 p.m. with your questions. Our first Virtual Town Hall event of this school year will be held on March 29, on the topic of social media. I am also looking forward to our numerous academic competitions in the upcoming months including the Elementary Math Challenge, Middle and High School Scholar Bowls, Mock Trial Debates, Laws of Life, the annual Collier County Spelling Bee, the 4th Annual iSteam Competition, and so much more.
I look forward to seeing what we can accomplish together in 2017!
