October 2019 - Volume 9, Issue 3
Message from the Superintendent
As we near the end of Quarter 1, it is certainly evident that the 2019-2020 school year is moving right along! My school visits have continued to show me our students' level of engagement and the innovative classroom learning is second to none.
A reminder for our Class of 2020 seniors: the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) completion period opens on October 1st. Click here for information regarding the application, FAFSA Completion Event dates, and helpful resources. Remember, the earlier you apply, the more opportunities for funding are available to you.
This year, our annual community STEAM event takes on a new name! The 2019-2020 STEAM Expo will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2020, at Golden Gate High School. The Call for Proposals will be open soon if you are interested in sharing a dynamic, hands-on STEAM activity or mini-project in our STEAM Village. Check for updates at collierschools.com.
Finally, our 5th Annual CCPS 5K Walk-Run is scheduled a little earlier this year than in the past. The race is set for Saturday, November 16th, and registration is now open. Michelle Watts
Avalon Elementary School (AVE)
Michelle Watts joined the Avalon Elementary School family three years ago. Initially, she spent almost every day in kindergarten, but now she is at the school two to three days a week as she balances her volunteer life with other responsibilities. Michelle would joke that she was learning her letters and numbers all over again and had to stay in kindergarten, but it was our students who were learning from her. Reporting for duty on the first day of school, she was ready to welcome new students. Michelle is truly dedicated to AVE students and enjoys instilling the love of learning in them. When asked by the students why they like her, it is unanimous, “She makes us laugh!” While loving and patient, Michelle is probably most famous at AVE for singing the numbers song in her opera voice! AVE teacher, Mrs. Gould, really enjoys having Michelle as her volunteer as they have bonded over the years and are more like family. There is a quote about volunteers which describes Michelle perfectly, “Volunteers are not paid — not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless.”
