February 2020 - Volume 9, Issue 7

Message from the Superintendent

With the second half of the 2019-2020 school year underway, we have many achievements, events, and accomplishments that continue to make us #CCPSProud.

The 2018-2019 graduation rates recently shared by the Florida Department of Education revealed that CCPS continues to lead in achieving success. Our District held its graduation rate of 91.9%, which continues to be the highest graduation rate in CCPS history. Over the past eight years, we have increased our graduation rate by 19.4 percentage points. We should all be #CCPSProud of the time and dedication our remarkable teachers, staff, parents, and community continue to put into each day.

Thank you to all that joined the Virtual Symposium at the end of January. A special thank you to our panel of experts that shared important information on Preparing Your Child to be Life Ready. Click here to visit our website with resources and recap videos from the Symposium.

New decade, new name for our annual STEAM event! The 2019-2020 STEAM Expo will be held on Saturday, February 1st. We look forward to welcoming back Kate the Chemist for another LIVE science demonstration that is set to surpass last year’s explosive show. Participants will be able to visit the STEAM Village and witness firsthand the continually growing interest and curiosity for science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM). I look forward to sharing highlights from this phenomenal event in March's edition of iNews.

Congratulations to Golden Gate Elementary School for being named the 2020 Elementary STEM School of Excellence award winner at the recent Future of Education Technology Conference. This national distinction is a testament to the innovative teaching and learning happening in the school's classrooms each and every day.

We provided another first for our #CCPSFamily this year at our inaugural ESE Expo events. We held one in Immokalee at the end of last year and just recently held one at Gulf Coast High School with great attendance. I am grateful for being part of a district that is able to offer this free event, giving parents the opportunity to connect with professionals and discover the many local resources available for preschool through high school transition-aged students with disabilities.

Have a phenomenal February.

~ Dr. Kamela Patton

COMMUNITY PARTNER SPOTLIGHT

The tag line to the Collier County Public Schools Strategic Plan is College, Career, and Life Ready. Students, teachers, parents, and the community work together to help prepare young people for a successful life. A number of key partnerships in the community help to support this vision. Junior Achievement of Southwest Florida (JA) is a partner that provides school site programs taught by members of the local business community. JA inspires and prepares young people to succeed in a global economy by supporting K-12 education programs in the areas of entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and workforce readiness. In elementary school, JA helps provide financial literacy curriculum taught by volunteers. In middle school, JA provides curriculum focused on Career/Work Readiness Skills, which introduces 8th grade students to high-demand jobs ranging from skilled trades to highly technical STEM careers. In high school, JA collaborates with the Greater Naples Chamber for the Career-Connect Program. This program provides high school students with work-based learning activities; every 10th grader throughout CCPS is introduced to career areas of their choice from professionals within our local community. Bringing education and business together, Junior Achievement is helping CCPS ensure students become College, Career, and Life Ready. To share your business experience with local students, click here to volunteer.

WHAT IS THE CENSUS?

If we realized our Collier community was missing out on millions of dollars in funding, shouldn’t we act? Homes across the country will begin receiving invitations, in mid-March, to complete the 2020 Census.

VOLUNTEER HIGHLIGHT

Margaret Dooley
East Naples Middle School (ENM)

East Naples Middle would like to highlight Margaret Dooley as an exceptional volunteer. Margaret is a vital addition to the school's Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) and volunteers countless hours in many ways. She is on campus every week to sell jackets to ENM students and diligently makes sure students have what they need. Margaret always offers to help during any school event. She can be found at Positive Behavior Support (PBS) events, faculty gatherings, cookie exchanges, and field trips. She is always willing to pitch in wherever there is a need. In addition, Margaret has been a dedicated volunteer in the school's Media Center for many years. Every Thursday, she is helping to place books on shelves and assisting students with book selections. Margaret has a wealth of knowledge in literature. East Naples Middle is extremely grateful to have her as part of the ENM Gator family.
