We Need You

Message from the Superintendent

Our Saturdays for Success Academy has had as many as 3,000 students in attendance each weekend. Our Title 1 schools, those with a high concentration of economically needy students, were chosen to take part in this academy program. The elementary students invited to attend are in need of help with FCAT and the high school students attending are in need of help passing End-of-Course exams, FCAT, or the ACT exam. Last spring we held classes at four high schools. We expanded this year to serve 23 schools, including several elementary schools. The strategic planning committee has been hard at work on the 2014-2016 strategic plan. This month, we will continue to work with community members to seek feedback and input and will present the plan to the Board at the April 2nd School Board Workshop. Throughout my time in Collier, I have been truly impressed with the community's willingness to support our school system. I would like to continue to engage the community by requesting your valuable input regarding spending reduction ideas. Please send your ideas and suggestions to us by clicking on the graphic above or by visiting the home page of our website at www.collierschools.com and clicking on the link under Community Input Requested. I wish you a safe and happy spring break week! ~ Dr. Kamela Patton

Message from the School Board Vice-Chair

At the February School Board meeting, we approved a policy which addresses the need to better educate coaches, student athletes, and parents/guardians about the nature and risks of concussions by distributing Florida High School Athletic Association educational material. It is also important to educate all interested parties about the school district’s proactive policy on management of sport-related concussions. Our school district has a program called ImPact (Immediate Post-concussion Assessment & Cognitive Testing), a scientifically validated, computer-based concussion evaluation system. It is a diagnostic tool to be used to assist in the evaluation and proper treatment of suspected head injuries and the prevention of second impact syndrome. It is used to establish baseline (pre-injury) brain function for all student athletes in contact sports, quickly and effectively assess the extent of suspected head injuries, compare baseline and post-injury assessment data to determine the extent of injuries, and determine when it is safe to return student athletes to active status. Our policy states that an athlete who exhibits signs or symptoms of concussion, or has abnormal cognitive testing, is not permitted to return to play on the day of the injury. Any athlete who denies symptoms but has abnormal sideline cognitive testing must be held out of activity. "When in doubt, hold them out." Once a concussion has been diagnosed, return to full practice may occur only after medical clearance! Our schools seek to provide a safe return to activity for all athletes after injury, particularly after a concussion. For more information, review the full policy and procedure which can be accessed through the district’s website. ~ Pat Carroll

Mrs. Susan Bane has been an extremely valuable volunteer at Osceola Elementary School and has truly become a part of the school community. Mrs. Bane has volunteered at Osceola for two years, devoting numerous hours to helping students, staff, and parents. Quite often, Mrs. Bane will spend an entire day at the school. She often begins her day by opening car doors at the morning car line, then helping students in the cafeteria, followed by attending to the circulation desk in the media center, and then finishing her day again opening car doors in the afternoon car line! These are just some of the numerous ways that Mrs. Bane volunteers with Osceola Elementary. School staff tell us they have come to rely on Mrs. Bane and don’t know what they would do without her!

Thank you to volunteers like Mrs. Bane who spend their time and talents giving to our students!
