5th Grade - January 2018

Welcome back to Science! We hope you had a wonderful winter break and are ready to get back to exploring what “matters”; ATOMS AND MATTER that is! Starting this month, our newsletters will provide you, the teacher, with direct links to the item specifications, content limits and CPALMS descriptors for the tested benchmarks. Use this information as you unpack the standards and plan targeted lessons with your grade level teams. Using learning goals and scales with your students will help them connect the dots and understand the “why” for the classroom activities. Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to everyone! We hope 2018 is filled with happiness and good health! The theme for January is sequencing. The sequencing of events can help students understand causes and effects of events in history and allow them to see connections to current events. This month students will learn how our culture changed during Colonial America and how colonists found new identities as conflict with Great Britain intensified. Consider having students create a living timeline to review the events that led up to the Revolutionary War.

Reminder: January 15th is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day! There are suggested lessons and ideas located in the curriculum guides. Please send us an email at strohm@collierschools.com to let us know if you have any special events or lessons taking place in your classroom!
