Biology - December 2018

Welcome to this issue of our Biology newsletter! These months are packed with opportunities to stretch the minds of Biology students with great Argument Driven Inquiry labs and extremely helpful CPalms tutorials. As we approach the end of first semester and the mid-term assessment, be sure to focus on critical content, content limits, item specifications and supports to provide for a comprehensive review for student success. We hope this newsletter will be useful as you and your team plan targeted, standards based lessons for your students.

MITOSIS, CELL CYCLE, AND CANCER

Clicking on each unit title will take you to the item specs and content limits for that standard as it pertains to the BIO EOC. Clicking on the standard number (SC.912.L.#.#) will take you to the FLDOE CPALMS description for that standard.

Learning Goals
SC.912.L.16.14; **SC.912.L.16.15 (**denotes honors only standard)

  1. Students will describe specific events occurring in each of the stages of the cell cycle and phases of mitosis, including cytokinesis. (Comprehension)

  2. Students will explain how mitosis forms new cells and its role in maintaining chromosome number during asexual reproduction. (Comprehension)

  3. Students will describe the similarities and differences between binary fission and mitotic cell division.
SC.912.L.16.8
  1. Students will relate the development of cancer (uncontrolled growth) to mutations that affect the proteins that regulate the cell cycle.
Vocabulary
carbohydrate, lipid, protein, nucleic acid

MEIOSIS

Clicking on each unit title will take you to the item specs and content limits for that standard as it pertains to the BIO EOC. Clicking on the standard number (SC.912.L.#.#) will take you to the FLDOE CPALMS description for that standard.

Learning Goals
SC.912.L.16.16; SC.912.L.16.17

  1. Students will differentiate between the process of mitosis and meiosis. (Comprehension)

  2. Students will describe the role of mitosis in asexual reproduction, and the role of meiosis in sexual reproduction, including how these processes may contribute to or limit genetic variation. (Comprehension)

Vocabulary
meiosis I (along with 4 phases), meiosis II (along with 4 phases), homologous chromosomes, crossing over, independent assortment, haploid, diploid, gemete, sexual reproduction
