Biology - February 2018

February begins with the study of life’s origins, natural selection and evolutionary changes. Under these standards, the EOC will also assess scientific claims and how to identify what is science, what resembles, but fails to meet the criteria for science. This is a great time to have students participate in a CER (Claim, Evidence, Reasoning) activity. We have also added links to useful CPALMS teaching ideas and tutorials. These time saving resources are standards based and align to the item specifications for biology. There is a video of your OUTSTANDING performance of “Uppercase Dominates!” at the bottom of the first unit under Arts Integration.

UNITS
Clicking on each unit title will take you to the cPALMS description for that standard. Clicking on the standard number will take you to the item specifications and content limits for the EOC.

Vocabulary
mutation, gene mutation, point mutation, chromosomal mutation, frameshift mutation, deletion, duplication, inversion, translocation

Vocabulary Valentine Activity For Growing Dendrites: Have students partner up and write a valentine poem or greeting card using the vocabulary words in context. The more words they use, the more points you award. Words that are relevant, but not on the list receive extra points.

Formative Assessment
Plickers - if you haven’t tried plickers, now is a great time! This quick and easy assessment tool allows you to ask multiple choice/true-false questions for formative assessment and gives immediate feedback by student name or number.
