A Call To Action Press Conference was held on Friday, June 7, by over 70 agencies in Collier County to address and support Water Safety and Drowning Prevention in Collier County. A new report released on May 24, 2024 from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, found that drowning fatalities in the United States have been increasing since 2020. This is a concerning trend, and Florida's numbers are particularly high right now, with 51 fatalities already recorded this year. Our community has experienced this recently with the tragic loss of both a child and an adult.

Drowning can happen to anyone including the best parents. It takes seconds and is 100% preventable. We are asking you to implement the layers of prevention to help avoid another fatal or non-fatal drowning in Collier County. We are asking you to take as many steps as you can this summer and throughout the year to help us keep all our children safe around all bodies of water.

What can you do? Apply as many layers of prevention as you can. Layers can fail, so having as many in place increases safety. We invite you to look over the Water Safety and Drowning Prevention Layers Checklist to learn how you and your family may increase your layers of protection against drowning.

Thank you for reviewing this safety information to help us to prevent any other family from these preventable tragedies. For further assistance, please reach out to the NCH Safe and Healthy Children’s Coalition 239-624-4033.
